Case Study: Wolcen Lords of Mayhem

0. Umbra intro

France's most successful game Kickstarter, our long-standing partner Wolcen has created an ambitious open-world horror-fantasy RPG, currently in development on CryENGINE. Inspired by classics like Diablo and Marvel Heroes, Wolcen (previously "Umbra") melds much-loved hack-and-slash gameplay with state-of-the-art graphics, as well as leveraging Kythera's character navigation features to unique effect.

Wolcen's visionary, free-ranging design found a great fit with Kythera's dynamic navigation, enabling destruction and making dynamic objects like bridges simple to use. As the project has progressed, extensions like instant local navmesh generation have meant that large procedurally generated levels are instantly ready for gameplay, and there's more to come. Wolcen's vision makes wide demands of its middleware – and in this case study, we’ll see how Kythera helped make that vision a reality. With an emphasis on effortless solutions to complex problems, Kythera is the ideal partner for an indie studio that dares to do things differently.
